Online Lab and Observatory
Phoenix, the first live science program in middle east, brings the opportunity to use a remotely controlled telescope and microscope and charge-coupled device (CCD) camera in a real-time, hands-on, interactive environment to students around the world. Phoenix enables students to increase their knowledge of astronomy and biology; improves their computer literacy; and strengthens their critical thinking skills. Phoenix is a program under management of World Wide Science.
The Phoenix program currently utilizes several telescopes and microscopes located around the world. The telescopes and microscope has been used by students, researchers, centers and universities to observe blilogical samples, Sun, Moon, comets, galaxies, nebulae, variable stars and other ambitious projects and experiments. Now through Phoenix, university students have researched and recorded data of surface of the Sun . Researchers of WWS are designing equipments for online solar radio observation which develop the phoenix usages. By this project, the Sun observers, around the world, can receive data, time to time.
The telescopes, microscopes and CCD cameras can be operated remotely by educators and students from the convenience of computers in their classrooms or home via modem and special softwares. Images can be downloaded to a remote user of the telescope in few minutes (the time depends upon the speed of the user's modem). These images can be stored in the user's computer for later image processing and study.
Educators and students can reserve observation time for any day of the week. Observation sessions can last from one hour to an entire day.
Phoenix works in 3 methods:
Online Onservation Crad: Every one who want to observe the sky and biological samples via online telescope or microscope can buy a online observation card (called Solaris) and observe part of the sky (Moon, Planets, Sun, deep sky, ...) and biological samples for a hour according to a calendar with voice chat with an scientific experts. Exclusive Online Observation (Via Internet): Organizations which want to establish exclusive online observation are able to reserve a time for online observation with voice chat with an scientific experts. This time might be 1 hour to over a day or night. (More Detailes)
Remote Contro Observation: Observers connect to WWS main server via intranet, control the telescope or microscope and take photos directly
World Wide Science help other observatory, university and schools to run rtheir own emote control observatory or live webcast systeam.
